What Makes Green Tea?

This type of tea originates from China and is made of leaves from Camellia sinensis that have undergone minimal oxidation through processing. This means that it is harvested and then preserved quickly. Since it was introduced over 4,000 years ago, Asian cultures used it for many different purposes such as controlling bleeding and helping heal wounds. It is now one of the most popular beverage choices.

Where to Find It

Green tea is the ingredients in many different things. It is used in beverages, health foods, supplements and even cosmetic items. Depending on where and how the tea was processed, green teas can have a range of tastes. These can include sweet, bittersweet, nutty, vegetal, buttery, floral, swampy, fruity and oceanic. You can enjoy green tea in a variety of forms. Hot or cold, you can even find a frozen Green Tea Frappuccino at Starbucks!

For Your Health

Green tea has been the focus of many health studies. They have suggested that green tea consumption has lowered risks of developing heart disease and certain types of cancer. Some of the extracts have also been shown to boost metabolism. Green tea has many enzymes, amino acids, vitamins and more. Green tea may decrease the absorption of iron and folic acid, so health experts suggest drinking it between meals. Usually waiting 1-2 hours between eating iron-rich foods and drinking tea can maximize absorption of nutrients.

Although no data makes it 100% clear that green tea is directly linked to these health benefits and more, there is a strong connection. Enjoy a cup of green tea and cheers to your health!
